Therapies » Interventions » Pain Management » Radiofrequency Denervation

The basic principle of radiofrequency lesion involves the placement of an insulated electrode shaft with an uninsulated tip into nervous tissue.3 If an electrical generator source is connected to this shaft, the electrical impedance of the surrounding tissue will allow current to flow from the generator into the tissue. This flow of current across the impedance will generate heat. The surrounding tissue is heated through resistive effect. It is therefore not the electrode that heats the tissue but vice versa.
Patients should understand and have realistic expectations of the procedure. Concurrent use of biofeedback, physical therapy, medications, behavioral modifications etc will increase the short and long term success of these procedures. The endpoint to neural lesioning is usually to facilitate and enhance some for physiotherapy. Keeping this in mind, the utilization of the multidisciplinary approach is mandatory.
