Pain Problems » Upper Limb » Neuropathic pain

The symptoms vary depending on the underlying aetiology for neuropathy. The complaints can be like burning, shooting, pins and needles sensation, icy feeling, lancinating, jabbing, swollen feet etc. Usually following terminologies are used to describe symptom complexes:

  1. Abnormal sensations
  2. Increased reaction to a stimulus in association with an increased threshold of perception for that stimulus
  3. Painful sensation secondary to an ordinarily nonpainful stimulus occurring in the presence of altered sensation for other modalities.
The symptoms might be only in upper limbs or lower limbs or both. There might be features of autonomic nervous system dysfunction like increased heart rate, low blood pressure, change in bowel habits and others.
