Discogenic pain is identified in 26% to 39% of patients with low backpain. Its diagnosis however remains difficult. Plain radiographs, computed tomography (CT) and Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have also been used to characterize the morphological changes of the intervertebral discs. However, these test are not sensitive to differentiate whether a disc is painful or not. Thus it is generally accepted among clinicians that discography is the most reliable test to diagnose discogenic pain, even though at times it continues to be controversial.
