IDET is a minimally invasive technique in which the annulus is subjected to thermal modulation. Introducing a flexible catheter performs IDET, containing a resistive coil, into the disc. It traverses the inner annulus such that it assumes a circular configuration. During a 16.5 minute interval the temperature is incremently raised to 90deg C. At these elevated temperatures it has been proposed that annular collagen denatures and outer annular neural elements are destroyed.
